Virtua Fighter's Return: A Glimpse into the Future

Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the footage offers a compelling preview of the game's visual style and combat mechanics.

The last major Virtua Fighter release was the 2021 remaster, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, for PlayStation 4 and Japanese arcades (with a Steam release slated for January 2025). This new installment promises a completely original experience, a significant departure from previous titles.

First shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, the footage, while impeccably choreographed and staged, showcases in-engine graphics. It provides a realistic representation of the game's potential visual fidelity, showcasing a departure from the franchise's signature hyper-stylized polygons. The visuals appear to blend elements of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6, offering a more realistic aesthetic. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting new outfits that deviate from his classic look.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for its work on the Yakuza series and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster (alongside Sega AM2), is leading development on this project alongside Sega's announced Project Century. While details remain scarce, director Riichirou Yamada's previous comments hint at Sega's ambitious vision for the franchise's revival. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared in the VF Direct 2024 livestream, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" This new entry promises to reignite the fighting game genre and solidify the 2020s as a golden age for fighting game enthusiasts.
