CD Projekt Red is setting a new standard for NPC development in The Witcher 4. Following feedback on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, the studio aims to create a truly immersive world where every non-playable character feels alive and unique.

Game director Sebastian Kalemba outlined their approach: “Our rule is: every NPC should seem to live their own life with their own story.”

This commitment is evident in the first trailer, showcasing the village of Stromford. Villagers are shown adhering to local superstitions, worshipping a forest deity. A scene depicts a girl praying in the woods until Ciri arrives to battle a monster.

Kalemba further elaborated: “We aim for maximum realism in NPCs – from appearance and facial expressions to behavior. This will create deeper immersion than ever before. We’re striving for unparalleled quality.”

The developers emphasize that each village and character will possess distinct traits and narratives, reflecting the unique beliefs and customs of isolated communities.

The Witcher 4 is slated for a 2025 release, and anticipation is high for further revelations on the game's innovative world and character design.
