Yoshi-P threatens lawsuit over FF14 stalking mod
In early 2025, a Final Fantasy 14 mod raised alarms over potential stalking after reports surfaced that it could extract hidden player data, including character details, retainer information, and linked alternate characters under Square Enix accounts.
The mod, called "Playerscope," enables users to monitor specific player data for anyone nearby. This information gets uploaded to a central database controlled by the mod creator—capturing details players normally can't access through standard in-game features, whether intentionally targeting someone or simply being in proximity.
Particularly concerning is its ability to expose "Content ID" and "Account ID," allowing cross-character tracking. This exploit manipulated Dawntrail expansion's Content ID system, originally designed for account-wide player blocking.
The sole opt-out method requires joining Playerscope's private Discord channel. Essentially, every FF14 player outside this channel remains vulnerable to data harvesting—a serious privacy violation prompting outcry. As one Reddit user remarked: "This exists solely for stalking purposes."
After gaining traction when leaked on GitHub weeks prior, Playerscope was flagged for TOS violations and removed—though mirrored copies reportedly surfaced on Gittea and Gitflic before disappearing. Private distribution channels may still harbor the mod.

Producer Naoki Yoshida addressed the controversy on FF14's official forums, implicitly referencing Playerscope while clarifying:
"We've verified third-party tools accessing normally hidden character data, specifically portions of internal account IDs used to trace connections between characters under one service account.
"Our teams recognize community concerns and are evaluating:
1. Demanding the tool's removal
2. Exploring legal recourse
"While personal account data like addresses remains secure, we understand player anxieties. Maintaining a safe environment remains paramount—we strongly advise against using or disseminating third-party tools.
"Such violations threaten player safety and breach FF14's User Agreement. We will maintain strict opposition."
Though common tools like Advanced Combat Tracker persist in raiding communities, Yoshida's legal warnings mark heightened enforcement.
Community backlash emerges
Player reactions to Yoshida's statement proved critical. One commenter noted: "Noticeably absent—fixing the vulnerability enabling this mod."
Another responded: "They could simply stop exposing data client-side. Is FF14's development truly too constrained for basic security measures?"
A third critique stated: "This response disappointingly ignores the core issue."
The Playerscope developer has remained silent.
