In the upcoming game Dune: Awakening, sandworms will play the role of a natural force rather than a tool that players can summon at their convenience. Unlike the universe depicted in Frank Herbert's novels, where characters could attract these giant creatures using a device known as a thumper, this feature will not be available in the game.

According to the developers, sandworms in Dune: Awakening are designed as NPCs with their own unique patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors, intricately woven into the game engine. Players cannot strategically summon a worm near an enemy's base to disrupt their plans. However, if a sandworm is already in the vicinity, players might be able to draw its attention by moving actively through the sand or using a thumper. It's important to note, though, that these actions do not guarantee the worm's appearance in the area.

The iconic act of riding sandworms, a staple of Freman culture as seen in Herbert's books and the subsequent films, will not be available at the launch of Dune: Awakening. The developers have cited pressure from the filmmakers behind the Dune cinematic universe as the reason for this exclusion. However, they have left the door open for future content updates, suggesting that post-launch patches might introduce more elements of Freman culture, including the possibility of worm-riding mechanics. At present, though, there is no guarantee that players will get to engage in this legendary activity.

Dune: Awakening is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow at a later date.
