Euchre uses a 24-card deck and features two teams of two players.

When a team "orders up trump," they declare their intention to win a majority of the tricks. Winning three or four tricks earns one point; winning all five earns two. Failing to win three tricks ("being euchred") results in a two-point penalty for that team.

A player with strong cards can "go alone," playing without a partner. Winning all five tricks alone scores four points; three or four tricks scores one point. Being euchred while playing alone still only awards the opponents two points.

The core rule: you're never forced to play trump (unless it's the lead suit), but you must follow suit if possible.
