The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, was announced at The Game Awards, sparking widespread excitement among fans. While details remain scarce, recent interviews shed some light on the project.

IGN confirmed with Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi that this is indeed a direct sequel to the original Ōkami, continuing the story from where the first game left off. When asked about the identity of the character shown in the TGA trailer, director Hideki Kamiya playfully responded with "I wonder...", but Hirabayashi confirmed it to be Amaterasu.

While not surprising to fans, the sequel's existence raises questions about the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Ōkamiden received mixed reviews, due in part to its handheld platform and the absence of key members from the original development team. Hirabayashi acknowledged the game's existence and the varied fan response, stating that the new sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline.

The original Ōkami's ending provides a natural springboard for a sequel. Amaterasu and another character embark on a new, unexplored journey, leaving ample room for new challenges and adventures.

However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in very early development, explaining the early announcement was driven by their excitement. According to Hirabayashi, further updates will be some time coming.
