Absolute Batman's Counterpart: The Absolute Joker Revealed

DC Comics has launched one of its most significant series in recent years with Absolute Batman, which quickly became the best-selling comic of 2024. Since its debut, the series has consistently topped sales charts, a testament to readers' enthusiastic response to this bold and often surprising reinvention of the Dark Knight.

Creators Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta have concluded their first story arc, "The Zoo," and recently shared insights with IGN about how Absolute Batman reimagines the traditional Batman mythos. They discussed the design of a notably muscular Batman, the impact of introducing a living mother into Bruce Wayne's life, and what readers can anticipate as the enigmatic Absolute Joker steps into the spotlight.

The Batman of the Absolute Universe stands out as an imposing figure, distinguished by his bulging muscles, shoulder spikes, and various enhancements to the classic Batsuit. This design earned him a spot on our list of the 10 greatest Batman costumes of all time. Snyder and Dragotta explained how they envisioned this hulking version of the Dark Knight, aiming to reflect a Batman without the traditional wealth and resources.

"Scott's initial idea was to go big," Dragotta shared with IGN. "That was his first direction to me: this is going to be the biggest Batman we've seen yet. When Scott saw my initial sketches, he wanted to go even bigger, pushing into Hulk-like proportions."

Dragotta elaborated, "The design was driven by the theme of making Batman a weapon. Every element, from his emblem to the entire suit, serves a purpose. It's no longer just a utility belt; everything is a tool. This concept will continue to evolve in future issues."

For Snyder, Batman's size was a necessity. "The classic Batman uses his extreme wealth as a superpower," he noted. "In this universe, without those resources, Batman's physical presence becomes his primary tool. His size, physicality, and the utility of his suit are what make him scary and effective against Gotham's criminals."

Snyder added, "The villains he faces think they're untouchable. But Batman, as a force of nature, challenges that notion. He's here to prove that he can indeed touch them."

The influence of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is evident in Absolute Batman, particularly in a striking splash page in issue #6 that pays homage to Miller’s iconic (and surprisingly divisive) Dark Knight Returns cover. Dragotta acknowledged this inspiration, saying, "Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's storytelling in Batman: Year One and Dark Knight Returns greatly influenced us. It felt necessary to give that nod."

Giving Batman a Family

Absolute Batman reworks many aspects of the Dark Knight's mythology, including stripping Bruce Wayne of his wealth and privilege. However, the most significant change is the revelation that his mother, Martha, is alive. This alteration transforms Batman from a solitary, wounded orphan into someone with more to lose.

"It was the element I debated the most," Snyder admitted. "Choosing Martha over Thomas felt more interesting, given Bruce's paternal relationships in other universes. Once we introduced her, she became the moral compass of the story. Bruce is still young and idealistic, but Martha adds both strength and vulnerability to his character."

Snyder continued, "Her presence in the world adds a new dimension to Bruce's character, becoming a core part of his and the book's DNA. It's thrilling to see how their relationship evolves unpredictably."

Another major change introduced in issue #1 is Bruce's childhood friendship with future villains like Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle. In this universe, they form an extended family, significantly influencing Bruce's transformation into Batman.

Snyder explained, "Without global training, Bruce learns from his friends. Oswald teaches him the underworld, Croc shows him how to fight, Eddie provides high-level detection skills, Harvey teaches city politics, and Selina offers invaluable lessons. Their relationships form the heart of the book, grounding and strengthening Bruce while also making him vulnerable."

PlayAbsolute Batman vs. Absolute Black Mask ---------------------------------------

In "The Zoo," Absolute Batman begins to establish his presence in Gotham as new costumed supervillains emerge. The focus is on Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, leader of the nihilistic Party Animals gang. Snyder and Dragotta initially considered a new villain but chose to revamp Black Mask, seeing him as fitting perfectly for this arc.

"We saw Black Mask as clay we could mold," Snyder said. "His nihilism and aesthetic fit the theme of a world beyond saving. We treated him like a creator-owned character, staying true to his crime boss DNA but making him fresh and our own."

The rivalry between Batman and Black Mask culminates in issue #6 with an intense confrontation on Sionis' yacht. Batman's brutal attack on Black Mask, using a bowling ball and his razor-sharp ears, underscores his underdog status in the Absolute Universe. Despite not killing Sionis, Batman's actions leave the villain severely injured and defeated.

"These lines weren't initially planned," Snyder reflected on the dialogue. "But they became the thesis of our Batman: he thrives on being told he doesn't matter, using it as fuel to prove them wrong."

The Threat of Absolute Joker

Where Batman exists, the Joker is never far behind. In the Absolute Universe, the Joker is Batman's dark mirror - the chaos to his order. The series builds toward their confrontation, with Absolute Joker first teased at the end of issue #1 as a wealthy, worldly, and humorless figure.

"The Zoo" concludes with another glimpse of the Joker, encased in a cocoon of dead babies and commanding his manservant to summon Bane. He's aware of Gotham's new protector but not ready to confront him directly yet.

"In this inverted system, Batman disrupts while Joker embodies the system," Snyder explained. "Their dynamic is always in relation. This Joker is already terrifying before meeting Batman, but their relationship will evolve throughout the series."

Dragotta added, "This Joker's been there, and his power is evident. We've planted clues like JK Industries and Ark-M. His storyline is coming, and we want readers to wonder what's happening."

PlayWhat to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane ---------------------------------------------------------

Issues #7 and #8 introduce a new arc with Marcos Martin illustrating and focusing on Mr. Freeze, offering a horror-tinged reinvention of the iconic villain. Snyder is excited about these issues, praising Martin's ability to capture the emotional heart of the story.

"Mr. Freeze reflects Bruce's struggles," Snyder said. "Both have faced similar challenges, but Freeze took a darker path. We're going dark with our villains in this universe, making it our creator-owned Batman."

Issue #6 also hints at an upcoming confrontation with Bane. "Bane is really big," Snyder teased. "We wanted someone who makes Bruce's silhouette look smaller."

Absolute Batman launched alongside Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman in 2024, with DC planning to add Absolute Flash, Absolute Green Lantern, and Absolute Martian Manhunter in 2025. While the series have been standalone, Snyder hinted at future interactions among the characters.

"You'll see hints of Bruce being aware of events in other parts of our Absolute Universe," Snyder said. "As we plan for 2025 and 2026, we'll show how these characters begin to affect each other and their villains."

Absolute Batman #6 is available in stores now, and you can preorder the Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo HC on Amazon.
