AMD GPU Selection Guide: Expert Reviews and Recommendations

When building your gaming PC, the cornerstone of your setup is undoubtedly the graphics card. Opting for an AMD graphics card can be a smart move, especially if you're looking to save money without sacrificing performance. AMD's current-generation graphics cards come equipped with ray tracing capabilities and support for FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), a popular upscaling technology compatible with most major PC games.

While there are more powerful options available, AMD graphics cards such as the Radeon RX 9070 XT deliver exceptional 4K performance without the exorbitant prices often seen with competing products. If you're targeting 1440p gaming, AMD's mid-range offerings provide excellent value for money.

Additionally, AMD's graphics architecture powers both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, which can ease the optimization process for developers when porting console games to PC. While this doesn't guarantee perfect PC performance, it's a helpful factor. If you're interested in Nvidia's offerings, check out my guide on the best Nvidia graphics cards.

Choosing the right AMD GPU involves more than just picking the fastest card available. Consider the resolution you'll be gaming at and your budget, as these factors significantly influence your decision.

Graphics Card Basics

Graphics cards are complex devices, but understanding a few key aspects can help you choose the right one. For AMD graphics cards, it's essential to identify if it's a current-generation model. AMD recently changed its naming convention, with the Radeon RX 9070 XT being the latest top-end card, succeeding the RX 7900 XTX. Any AMD card starting with '9' is current-generation, while '7' and '6' denote older generations. The 'XT' or 'XTX' suffix indicates a step up in performance within the same class.

This naming convention began with the Radeon RX 5700 XT in 2019. Older models, such as the RX 580 or RX 480, are outdated and should be avoided unless you can find them for under $100. Generally, higher numbers indicate better performance, but specific specs like VRAM, compute units, and ray tracing capabilities are crucial for detailed comparisons.

VRAM, or video memory, is vital, especially at higher resolutions. For 1080p gaming, 8GB of VRAM is sufficient, while 1440p requires 12GB-16GB, and 4K gaming benefits from as much VRAM as possible. The Radeon RX 9070 XT, for instance, comes with 16GB of VRAM.

Compute units, which house streaming multiprocessors (SMs), are another critical factor. The latest AMD cards have 64 SMs per compute unit, so the Radeon RX 7900 XTX with 96 compute units totals 6,144 SMs. Each compute unit also includes dedicated hardware for ray tracing, with 1 RT Core per unit, leading to 96 RT Cores in the RX 7900 XTX.

Before finalizing your choice, ensure your PC can support the chosen graphics card. Check your case dimensions and power supply wattage to accommodate high-end GPUs, which typically require more power.

What is FSR?

FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is AMD's upscaling technology for PCs. It uses software to upscale lower resolution frames to your native resolution, improving frame rates by rendering at a lower resolution and then upscaling. FSR 4, introduced with the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT, leverages AI accelerators for more accurate upscaling, enhancing image quality over previous versions. FSR also includes frame generation to further boost performance, though it can introduce latency at lower frame rates.

What is Ray Tracing?

Ray tracing enhances the realism of lighting in 3D scenes by simulating how light rays interact with the environment. This technology, supported by RT Cores in AMD and Nvidia graphics cards, adds significant computational load but improves visual fidelity. Early implementations focused on specific effects like reflections, while newer games like Cyberpunk 2077 utilize full path tracing for comprehensive lighting enhancements.
