Apple Announces Its Latest Budget Phone, the iPhone 16e
Apple Unveils the iPhone 16e: A Budget-Friendly Option with Compromises
Apple launched the iPhone 16e on Wednesday, its newest entry-level model. Replacing the iPhone SE (2022), the 16e starts at $599, significantly closer in price to the $799 iPhone 16. Pre-orders begin Friday, February 21st, with availability starting February 28th.
A Key First: Apple's C1 Modem
The iPhone 16e is notable for debuting Apple's in-house C1 cellular modem. While Apple's silicon prowess is well-established (M-series and A-series chips), the modem's performance is crucial. Hopefully, Apple has addressed potential connectivity issues, learning from past experiences.
iPhone 16e: Design and Features

Visually similar to the iPhone 14 from the front, the iPhone 16e boasts a 6.1-inch OLED display (2532x1170 resolution, 1200-nit peak brightness). However, it falls short of the iPhone 16's display quality. It includes an Action button and USB-C port, but lacks Camera Control.
The rear design is distinct, featuring a single 48MP camera. While sharing similarities with the iPhone 16's main camera, it omits sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic Styles, and adjustable portrait mode focus. The selfie camera, however, is identical, retaining Face ID.
The phone utilizes an aluminum frame, glass back, and Apple's Ceramic Shield (the older formulation) on the front. While advertised as "tougher than any smartphone glass," this older generation contrasts with Apple's newer, supposedly "two times tougher" Ceramic Shield.
Internal Specifications: A Calculated Compromise
The iPhone 16e employs an A18 chip, matching the iPhone 16 but with a reduced 4-core GPU compared to the iPhone 16's 5-core GPU. Performance is expected to be a step down from the iPhone 16, and even further behind the iPhone 16 Pro. However, the inclusion of the Neural Engine ensures compatibility with Apple's intelligence features.
Pricing and Competition: A Narrower Margin
The $599 price point, while making it Apple's cheapest, represents a smaller discount compared to previous budget iPhones. The 2022 iPhone SE, launched at $429, offered a significantly larger discount. While the iPhone 16e's design is more current than the 2022 SE, it faces stiff competition from Android alternatives like the OnePlus 13R, priced around $600. Apple's success with the 16e will depend on its appeal beyond its existing user base. The phone's actual performance remains to be seen.
