Following Avowed's successful launch, Game Director Carrie Patel shared her vision for the game's future during an interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025. Although no official plans have been announced, Patel's enthusiasm for expanding the Avowed universe is clear. She mentioned, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it." This suggests that fans might look forward to future expansions or even a sequel.

Changes in Avowed During Development

The journey to Avowed's release was filled with twists and turns. Patel described the development process as "messy" but ultimately successful. The project kicked off in 2018 amidst Obsidian's plans to sell the company. Despite successes with titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, being independent presented its challenges. Microsoft's acquisition in 2020 marked a new chapter, although it required the team to make tough decisions, such as scrapping multiplayer features and rebooting the game under new leadership in January 2021.

Under Patel's direction, the team shifted focus to emphasize the rich story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, opting for open zones over an open world to enhance the game's environments.
