Conquer the Iconic Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The Battle of Hulao Gate, a legendary clash in the Dynasty Warriors series, presents a formidable challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. This guide provides a strategic walkthrough to help you overcome this crucial stage in Chapter 2. The objective: defeat Dong Zhuo.

Initial Assault:

Begin by capturing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right corner. After securing two, a cutscene will trigger, introducing mounted cavalry. Continue your base conquest; defeating Zhang Liao, the cavalry commander, rewards you with a twin pike weapon. Once all bases are under your control, assault Hulao Gate.

The First Stand Against Dong Zhuo:

The initial battle is chaotic. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he initiates his Grand Tactic. This weakens enemy defenses, allowing you to advance towards Hulao Gate.

Lu Bu's Arrival:

Dong Zhuo will deploy Lu Bu. Avoid direct confrontation. Lu Bu is overwhelmingly powerful. Instead, focus on eliminating nearby enemy officers to maintain morale, which Lu Bu significantly drains. Lu Bu will eventually target your main base and Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to pursue him. Liu Bei's forces will temporarily contain Lu Bu, giving you a time window to defeat Dong Zhuo. If Liu Bei's forces retreat, prioritize defeating Dong Zhuo; otherwise, Lu Bu will defeat Yuan Shao, ending the mission.

The Final Push Against Dong Zhuo:

Once Lu Bu departs, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Then, capture the northern and western bases. With all three squads poised to attack, and fully healed, charge towards Dong Zhuo's commander's circle.

Dong Zhuo's Grand Tactics:

Dong Zhuo will unleash two Grand Tactics involving fireballs. The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage (if available) to breach the soldier barricade protecting them. The second Grand Tactic necessitates defeating an officer. Take the right-hand stairs, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan, now fighting for Dong Zhuo. A duel with Diaochan, while challenging, simplifies the encounter.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

After thwarting the Grand Tactics, the path to Dong Zhuo should be clear. Your forces, boosted by morale, and with Lu Bu still engaged elsewhere, should easily overwhelm Dong Zhuo's remaining forces. A possible Grand Tactic by Dian Wei further simplifies the final confrontation. While a duel is tempting, a standard defeat of Dong Zhuo is sufficient at this point.
