Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead! Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.

Adding star power to the project, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.

This reboot comes after allegations of a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel, surfaced against Whedon.

Plot details remain scarce, but the new series will center on a new generation of Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's iconic Buffy making a comeback.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. She was aided by friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a spin-off, Angel, and subsequent comic books.
