DCU Film The Authority 'On the Back Burner,' as James Gunn Points to Difficulty 'Getting It Right in a World With The Boys'
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn recently revealed that the highly anticipated The Authority film has been placed on the back burner. This comes as a surprise, considering the project was announced two years ago as a key component of the DC Universe's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters reboot. Initially described as a "big movie," The Authority, featuring the brutally effective superhero team from the WildStorm Universe, has apparently encountered significant hurdles.
Gunn cited the project's complexity and the impact of Amazon's The Boys as contributing factors to the delay. He explained that adapting The Authority in a landscape already shaped by similar, successful properties presented unique challenges. The evolving overarching story and the desire to seamlessly integrate existing characters and storylines further complicated the process. As a result, the film is currently less of a priority.

It's worth noting that Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, a powerful member of The Authority, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman film. Her abilities, including self-duplication, technopathy, genius-level intellect, and radio-induced telepathy, make her a formidable character. Other Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters projects have also faced setbacks. Gunn mentioned that Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, has experienced some delays. However, Booster Gold is progressing well, and Paradise Lost remains a high priority, with the pilot script currently underway.
Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is patiently awaiting the availability of director James Mangold, allowing him time to complete other projects before focusing on the film. While acknowledging Mangold's talent and their willingness to wait, Gunn and Safran clarified that Swamp Thing is not essential to the overarching narrative of Chapter 1.
