Chess Enters the Esports Arena

Chess Makes its Esports Debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup!

The ancient game of chess is making headlines as a new addition to the 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC) lineup. This surprising inclusion of a centuries-old strategy game into the world's largest gaming and esports festival is the result of a major collaboration between Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF). This partnership aims to introduce chess to a broader, more mainstream audience.

EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," expressing excitement about its inclusion. He noted chess's rich history, global appeal, and thriving competitive scene as ideal qualities for the EWC's mission to unite global gaming communities.

World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a wider audience. Carlsen expressed his enthusiasm, stating the partnership presents a "fantastic opportunity to grow the game" and inspire new players.

Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown

Chess's Esports World Cup Appearance

The EWC will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025. Top chess players from around the world will compete for a substantial $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be determined through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), with the top 12 players from the February and May tournaments, plus four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," securing spots in the EWC. The CCT itself boasts a $300,000 prize pool.

To enhance the appeal for esports fans, the 2025 CCT will feature a faster-paced format. Matches will utilize a 10-minute time control with no increment, a departure from the traditional longer time limits of world championships. Armageddon tiebreakers will determine winners in close contests.

Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has captivated players across generations. Its digital adaptation, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, significantly broadened its reach, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Popular media, including streaming services and shows like "The Queen's Gambit," have further boosted the game's visibility.

With its official recognition as an esport, chess is poised for even greater growth and popularity.
