Nearly three decades after its cinematic debut, Event Horizon is expanding its dark legacy with a prequel comic series titled Event Horizon: Dark Descent. Announced by IDW Publishing, this five-issue series will delve into the mysterious events preceding the original film, uncovering the harrowing fate of the ship’s first crew.

Penned by Christian Ward (Batman: City of Madness) and illustrated by Tristan Jones (Aliens: Defiance), the series features striking colors by Pip Martin (That Texas Blood) and cover art from Ward, Jeffrey Alan Love, Martin Simmonds, and Joshua Hixson.

IDW’s official synopsis for Event Horizon: Dark Descent #1:

Embracing the hard-R intensity of the cult classic film, EVENT HORIZON: DARK DESCENT #1 (of 5) will launch into comic shops this August. Set before the events of the movie and designed to be fully accessible to new readers, this series reveals the chilling truth behind the original crew’s disappearance. What became of Captain Kilpack and his team as the Event Horizon plunged through a realm of unimaginable horror? As demonic forces—led by Paimon, the eyeless King of Hell—descend upon the ship, the crew faces unspeakable torment in a tale of cosmic dread and pure evil.

Christian Ward shared his excitement: “It's a huge privilege to be handed the keys to such a beloved film, one I take very seriously—and I have some extremely exciting things up my sleeve. Big, gory swings are coming. You’ll never see the film in the same light again.”

He added, “What I’m building into the lore will surprise fans. It’s given me some truly visceral, disturbing material to work with visually, and knowing we’re collaborating directly with the creative team behind the original film ensures this feels authentic and essential for longtime fans.”
