Game Boy Classics Rise Again on Steam Deck
This guide details how to install EmuDeck and play Game Boy games on your Steam Deck, optimizing performance with Decky Loader and Power Tools. The Steam Deck, while powerful for modern gaming, also excels at retro gaming with the right setup.
Before You Begin:
You'll need:
- A fully charged Steam Deck.
- An A2 microSD card for games and emulators.
- Legally obtained Game Boy ROMs.
- A Bluetooth or wired keyboard and mouse (recommended for easier navigation).
Enable Developer Mode and CEF Debugging on your Steam Deck (instructions within the original article).
Installing EmuDeck:
Follow these steps in Desktop Mode:
- Download EmuDeck from the official website.
- Choose SteamOS and a custom installation.
- Select your SD card as the primary installation location.
- Choose your desired emulators (RetroArch, Emulation Station, Steam ROM Manager are recommended).
- Enable AutoSave.
- Complete the installation.
Quick Settings (EmuDeck):
Within EmuDeck, enable AutoSave, Controller Layout Match, Bezels, Nintendo Classic AR, and LCD Handhelds.
Adding Game Boy Games:
Using Dolphin File Manager, navigate to Primary > Emulation > ROMs > gb and transfer your .gb ROMs. Ensure correct filenames.
Using Steam ROM Manager:
Within EmuDeck, use Steam ROM Manager to add your Game Boy games to your Steam library. This will allow launching games directly from your Steam library.
Playing Game Boy Games:
Access your Game Boy games through your Steam Library's Collections tab.
Customizing Game Colors (RetroArch):
