Neil Druckmann: Abby in 'The Last of Us' Didn't Gain Muscle Due to HBO Narrative Changes

HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will portray Abby differently than in the game. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the same physical build because the show prioritizes drama over the game's action-focused mechanics. Abby's formidable nature will be explored through her spirit rather than solely her physical strength.

Druckmann highlights the difference in portraying Ellie and Abby in the game versus the show. The game required distinct mechanical differences between the characters, with Abby designed as a physically dominant force. The show, however, focuses on character drama, lessening the need for such pronounced physical contrasts.

Craig Mazin adds that this approach allows for exploring a more vulnerable, yet spiritually stronger Abby. The show's narrative will delve into the origins and manifestations of her strength.

HBO plans to adapt The Last of Us Part 2 over multiple seasons, unlike Season 1's single-season adaptation of the first game. Season 2, with a planned seven episodes, will conclude at a natural breakpoint.

The controversial nature of Abby's character has led to online harassment of Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and Laura Bailey. This online abuse, including threats against Bailey's family, necessitated extra security measures for actress Kaitlyn Dever during filming. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina, emphasizes that Abby is a fictional character and not deserving of such hateful actions.
