Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat Now Requires Phone Number Verification
The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is set to introduce a built-in video calling feature called GameChat, marking a significant shift in Nintendo’s approach to social interaction on its hybrid console. As part of the system’s core functionality, GameChat will be available across all Nintendo Switch 2 units and is being positioned as one of the console’s standout features.
However, users should be aware that setting up GameChat requires an additional layer of verification. During the setup process, users will need to provide a valid phone number linked to their Nintendo Account. Nintendo will then send a text message to that number to verify ownership, effectively tying your GameChat activity to a real-world contact method. This measure is likely intended to promote responsible use and reduce misuse of the feature.
For users under the age of 16, parental controls are in place to ensure appropriate usage. Before enabling GameChat, a parent or guardian must approve the feature via the Nintendo Parental Controls mobile app. Once approved, the guardian will also need to submit their own phone number for verification purposes.
According to information found on Nintendo's official website—first spotted by Eurogamer—it appears that every user with a Nintendo Account may be required to complete this verification process, even if multiple users share the same console. IGN has reached out to Nintendo for confirmation regarding this detail.
How to Use GameChat
Accessing GameChat during gameplay is designed to be seamless. The new “C” button, present on all Nintendo Switch 2 controllers, acts as the dedicated shortcut to activate the feature. Pressing it opens up the ability to start or join a call instantly.
GameChat supports group interactions with two primary modes: video and audio. Up to four players can participate in a live video call using an optional camera peripheral, while up to 24 players can join a voice-only group session. Video participants can choose to broadcast either their webcam feed or stream their gameplay directly to others in the call—an innovative addition that brings Nintendo closer to parity with other major gaming platforms.
Technical Considerations and Developer Impact
While GameChat introduces exciting new capabilities, there are questions around how it affects system performance. According to Digital Foundry, who reviewed the final technical specifications of the Nintendo Switch 2, GameChat places a notable demand on system resources.
Nintendo reportedly provides developers with a testing tool that simulates API latency and L3 cache misses caused by GameChat, allowing them to optimize games without running active sessions. While it remains unclear whether GameChat will visibly affect game performance when enabled, the inclusion of these tools suggests there could be some impact depending on how system resources are allocated.
As Digital Foundry noted: "We'll be interested to see how GameChat may (or may not) impact game performance as this does seem to be an area of developer concern." Final insights into GameChat’s effect on frame rates or load times will have to wait until the Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5, 2025.
Pricing and Availability
Good news for early adopters: GameChat will be completely free to use for the first 10 months following the Nintendo Switch 2 launch. After March 31, 2026, access to GameChat will require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership—a move that aligns with Nintendo’s growing focus on premium online services.
Recent reports also confirmed the design of the Switch 2 game cartridge and hinted at potential display upgrades. Samsung has reportedly expressed interest in supplying OLED panels for future iterations of the device, though nothing has been officially announced.
