The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer immediately reveals a larger console than its predecessor. As the original Switch's Joy-Cons detach, the tablet section visibly expands, showcasing a significant size increase. This suggests a departure from Nintendo's traditionally pocket-sized handhelds, embracing the larger portable devices exemplified by the Steam Deck and iPad.

While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, we can estimate the Switch 2's size based on the trailer and a recent leak. A Switch 2 mock-up, handled at CES 2025 by peripheral maker Genki, closely mirrors the trailer's design. Therefore, the measurements taken from the mock-up likely provide a good approximation of the final product.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

Our estimations point to an 8-inch screen for the Switch 2 (diagonal measurement, excluding bezels). This aligns with earlier 2024 rumors. We project the display to be approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall.

This represents a nearly 30% increase in diagonal screen size and a 66% increase in area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch display. The Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen is 45% smaller diagonally and 111% smaller in area. The Switch OLED's 7-inch screen is 14% smaller diagonally and 30% smaller in area.

The Switch 2's screen surpasses even the Steam Deck's 7-inch (original) and 7.4-inch (OLED) displays, exceeding the larger Steam Deck OLED by 8% diagonally and 11% in area.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

The larger screen necessitates a larger console. Our measurements of the Genki mock-up, corroborated by trailer analysis, suggest the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. This is about 25% larger than the original Switch (239mm x 102mm), 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). Depth appears similar to the original Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The trailer suggests similarly wide Joy-Cons, but taller. Our estimations indicate 32mm wide and 115mm tall—the same width as the originals (excluding the slot system), and 13mm taller, representing a 13% increase in size.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the screen unit at 200mm long and 115mm tall, approximately 31% larger than the original. This size comfortably accommodates the 8-inch screen, suggesting approximately 11mm side bezels and 8mm top/bottom bezels.

These measurements are estimations. While based on the Genki mock-up, they may differ from Nintendo's official figures. However, we anticipate a console roughly 25% larger than the original.
