Live-action Disney remakes persist — and that's fine
Remember back in March 2025 when many declared the era of live-action animated remakes was ending? That's when Disney's Snow White premiered and underperformed. Shortly after, Disney paused development on a live-action Tangled adaptation. Whether directly related or not, Snow White's reception sparked speculation that the remake trend might finally fade.
...Then came the live-action Lilo & Stitch, which became an instant box office smash.
Now Universal enters the arena with its first animated remake - DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon - releasing this weekend with strong pre-release projections.Next year also brings Disney's live-action Moana, likely to succeed given the animated sequel's recent billion-dollar performance.
This suggests the remake trend won't disappear soon. While Disney may grow more selective - focusing on 90s-era films with stronger generational appeal versus outdated classics like Snow White - the financial incentives remain clear. Future remakes of Frozen, Encanto, and likely Tangled seem inevitable.
Financial Success vs Artistic Merit
While commercially viable, these remakes often lack artistic inspiration. Some, like Disney's Pinocchio or 2019's technically-animated The Lion King, delivered visuals but lost the original's emotional core. Yet the outrage sometimes exceeds reason - these remakes don't replace originals. Even billion-dollar hits like 2017's Beauty and the Beast eventually see merchandise revert to classic designs.

Select remakes have surpassed their originals - 2016's The Jungle Book and Pete's Dragon (both animation/live-action hybrids) achieved this. Yet even then, Disney parks still feature the classic animated versions.
New Remakes, Classic Legacies
The 2025 How to Train Your Dragon remake successfully retells the beloved story (albeit with some early-scene constraints from closely following the original). Strikingly, some first-time viewers experienced the same emotional impact as the animated version's audience. Universal has already greenlit a sequel, while simultaneously opening a new Epic Universe theme park land based on the animated films - demonstrating how both versions can coexist.
Ultimately, remakes don't threaten originals. Whether successful or disappointing, they either reignite appreciation for the classic or reinforce why it remains superior. The originals remain permanently accessible - exactly as they always were.
