Scarlett Johansson Criticizes Oscars for Overlooking Avengers: Endgame
Scarlett Johansson, a two-time Academy Award nominee, has expressed her surprise over the fact that *Avengers: Endgame*—one of the most celebrated and commercially successful films in cinematic history—received only a single Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the actress voiced her disbelief, stating, “How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar? It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, yet it truly functions as a cohesive and powerful film—and on top of that, it’s one of the most successful movies ever made.”
While *Avengers: Endgame* is widely regarded as one of the finest entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Academy Awards have historically been hesitant to recognize superhero or genre-based films in major categories such as Best Actor, Best Actress, or Best Director. To date, the only Marvel Studios film to earn an Oscar nomination outside of technical categories is *Black Panther*, which received multiple nods—including Best Picture—in 2018. Despite this oversight, Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow has been consistently praised throughout her decade-long journey in the MCU, from her debut in *Iron Man* (2008) to her emotional send-off in *Endgame*.

In the same interview, Johansson also shared that she likely won’t reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff in any future MCU projects. She stated, “It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity returning would make sense—for me, and for the character that I play.” Although she acknowledges the emotional connection she shares with her fellow cast members, she believes that Romanoff’s story arc reached a meaningful conclusion in *Avengers: Endgame*. She added, “I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that—for fans, too; it’s important for them.”
Following Natasha Romanoff’s tragic demise in *Avengers: Endgame*, Johansson returned to the MCU for one final chapter in the character’s past. In 2021, she starred in the prequel film *Black Widow*, where she reprised her role as the iconic spy, also serving as an executive producer for the project.
