In television, classic shows never truly fade away — and in a year witnessing revivals ranging from The Office to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the beloved 2000s medical comedy Scrubs is joining the trend.

Nearly a quarter-century since Zach Braff first portrayed intern JD at Sacred Heart Hospital, the actor has confirmed his return for ABC's upcoming Scrubs revival, which will blend original cast members with fresh faces.

A Second Chance for Sacred Heart

This revival concept might seem familiar — ABC previously attempted a soft reboot during Scrubs' controversial ninth season, where Braff and fellow veterans transitioned the show to a new generation of interns. The approach fell flat, leading to cancellation after nine episodes.

Now, nearly 20 years later, original creator Bill Lawrence is steering the revival's return, describing it as a hybrid reboot that honors the original while introducing new perspectives.

With Braff officially onboard, sources indicate other core cast members may soon join the project. Lawrence explained his vision to Deadline: "The revival needs to accomplish two things — satisfying fans' curiosity about their favorite characters while capturing that fresh-faced idealism of new medical professionals, which made the original so special."

During its initial run from 2001–2010, Scrubs delivered 182 episodes across nine seasons. Production timelines for the revival remain undisclosed.
