Sony Unveils teamLFG: A New PlayStation Studio Crafting Team-Based Action Game Blending Fighting, MOBA, and Frog-Type Elements
Sony has unveiled a new PlayStation studio, teamLFG, which originated from Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, shared his excitement about teamLFG's ambitious incubation project.
The name teamLFG derives from the gaming term 'Looking For Group,' highlighting the studio's focus on social gaming. Their debut game is described as a team-based action game that blends elements from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." Set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe, the game aims to foster friendship, community, and a sense of belonging among players.

teamLFG's mission is to create games where players can find joy in discovering teammates online, recognize familiar names, and create memorable moments that become the stuff of legends and memes. The studio emphasizes the importance of players pulling off game-changing plays that define the match's story. "As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff," they stated.
The studio plans to develop immersive multiplayer worlds, encouraging players to learn, play, and master the game over countless hours. They intend to involve the community in the development process through early access playtests, remaining agile to respond to player feedback not only before launch but throughout the game's live service, fostering continuous growth and engagement.

teamLFG's project emerged from Bungie amidst significant layoffs last year. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie faced challenges in meeting financial targets, particularly with Destiny 2. This led to layoffs affecting 100 employees in November 2023 and another 220 in 2024, with 155 being reassigned within Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during this period that the incubation project, now known as teamLFG, was announced.
Last year, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in implementing changes to Destiny 2, suggesting that the parent company's influence was beneficial. Since then, Bungie has fully revealed the extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
