Sony's PS5 Controller to Transform into Gun, Predicting Player Moves

Sony continues to expand its extensive patent portfolio with two intriguing innovations aimed at enhancing gameplay immersion. Discover how an AI-powered predictive camera and a DualSense gun trigger attachment could reshape your next gaming session.
Two New Patents For Sony
AI That Predicts Your Movement To Reduce Lag

Among Sony’s latest publicly disclosed patents are two particularly innovative concepts: one involving an AI-integrated camera system designed to anticipate player input, and another introducing a firearm-style trigger attachment for the DualSense controller.
The first of these is titled Timed Input/Action Release. It outlines a system in which a dedicated camera monitors both the player and their controller. Using machine learning or other advanced analytical technologies, this system analyzes video footage to predict what button inputs the player is about to make. Alternatively, it could interpret partial or incomplete controller actions and infer the intended command.
The primary goal of this technology is to reduce input lag—especially crucial in online multiplayer games where milliseconds matter. By staying one step ahead of player actions, the system aims to streamline responsiveness and improve overall gameplay fluidity.
A Trigger Attachment For The DualSense Controller For Realistic Gunfights

The second patent details a modular trigger attachment that transforms the DualSense controller into a more realistic shooting device, ideal for FPS titles or action-adventure RPGs featuring firearms.
Once attached, players hold the controller sideways, using the right arm of the device as a makeshift stock. The gap between the R1 and L1 buttons acts as the gun’s sight, while pressing the trigger simulates firing a real weapon, offering enhanced tactile feedback and immersive control. According to the patent, this accessory could also be compatible with other devices, including the PSVR2 headset, further expanding its potential use cases.
Sony has a long history of forward-thinking patents—78% of its 95,533 total patents remain active today. Other previously patented ideas include adaptive difficulty systems, a DualSense variant with built-in earbud storage and charging, and even a temperature-responsive controller that alters its surface feel based on in-game events.
However, it's important to note that not all patented concepts become commercial products. Whether these inventions will ever reach consumers remains to be seen. Only time will reveal if these futuristic designs evolve into tangible hardware.
