Steam Doubles Down On Banning Games With Forced In-Game Advertisements
Steam Cracks Down on Forced In-Game Ads and Abandoned Early Access Titles
Valve has clarified its stance on in-game advertising, reinforcing its existing policy against games that force players to watch ads. A newly dedicated policy page details this rule, aiming to improve the user experience on the platform.

No More Forced Ads: The policy, part of Steamworks' terms for nearly five years, prohibits games requiring ad viewing for gameplay or offering rewards for watching ads. This practice, common in free-to-play mobile games, is explicitly banned on Steam. The dedicated page likely reflects the platform's significant growth—SteamDB reports over 18,942 game releases in 2024 alone.

Options for Developers: Games relying on this model must remove ad elements or transition to a paid model. A free-to-play model with optional microtransactions or DLC is also acceptable. Good Pizza, Great Pizza serves as an example of a successful mobile-to-Steam port utilizing this alternative approach.

Permitted Advertising: The policy doesn't ban all forms of advertising. Product placement and cross-promotions (with proper licensing) are allowed. Examples include sponsor logos in racing games or real-world brands in skateboarding games.
This policy prioritizes high-quality games and an ad-free user experience. Steam users can expect a more immersive gaming environment without disruptive advertisements.
Early Access Game Monitoring:
Steam has implemented a new feature to flag Early Access games untouched for over a year. These games now display a message on their store pages indicating the time since their last update and a disclaimer about potentially outdated information.

This addition complements existing user reviews and helps customers identify potentially abandoned projects. While many welcome this change, some suggest delisting games neglected for extended periods (five years or more). The community response on social media and Steam forums has been largely positive.
