How To Use the Great Sword in Monster Hunter Wilds: All Moves and Combos

The *Monster Hunter* series is renowned for its diverse weapon selection, and the Great Sword in *Monster Hunter Wilds* is a prime example of powerful, albeit slow, weaponry. This guide will equip you with the knowledge to master this behemoth of a blade.

The Great Sword, true to its name, is a heavy hitter. Each swing packs a devastating punch, capable of inflicting immense damage. However, mastering its timing and techniques is crucial to maximizing its potential. Future upgrades will further enhance its raw power and imbue it with elemental advantages.

Triangle/Y + Circle/BRising SlashAn upward slash ideal for hitting high areas on monsters.

Mastering Great Sword Combos

Effective Great Sword combat hinges on mastering several key combos, each designed to maximize damage output and increase your chances of success.

True Charged Slash Combo

Executed by pressing Triangle/Y three times, this combo starts with an Overhead Slash, followed by a Strong Charged Slash, and culminates in the devastating True Charged Slash. Charging each slash (holding the button) increases damage, indicated by the hunter's changing glow (white, yellow, then red). Hitting a weak point with the True Charged Slash triggers the even more powerful True Charged Slash (Power). A shortcut involves dodging after the initial hit to immediately transition to the Strong Charged Slash, improving speed and damage output.

Forward Lunging Combo

This three-hit combo (Circle/B x3) consists of a Wide Slash, a Tackle, and a Leaping Wide Slash. Its wide reach makes it ideal for larger, less predictable targets. Combining it with Focus Mode ensures maximum damage against weak points and wounds.

Stationary Combo

Best utilized against paralyzed or otherwise incapacitated monsters, this four-hit combo (Wide Slash and Rising Slash repeated twice) offers quick, consistent damage, though it's less powerful than other options.

Defense and Counterattacks

Offset Rising Slash (Counter)

While useful on its own against tall monsters, the Offset Rising Slash excels as a counterattack. Charging the move (holding Triangle/Y + Circle/B) and releasing it precisely as a monster attacks will knock it down, setting up a Cross Slash (Triangle/Y) for follow-up damage. Perfect timing is key; mistiming leaves you vulnerable.

Guarding

Holding R2/RT activates the guard, mitigating incoming damage at the cost of stamina. Perfect Guards, achieved by guarding at the exact moment of impact, completely negate damage and sometimes trigger a Power Clash (mash Circle/B) to knock down the monster.

With these techniques, you'll be well on your way to mastering the Great Sword in *Monster Hunter Wilds*. For more *Monster Hunter Wilds* guides and strategies, be sure to explore The Escapist.
