Take-Two CEO Pledges Support for Legacy Games
With Grand Theft Auto 6 set to launch in fall 2025, many fans wonder what will happen to GTA Online. Since its announcement, players have speculated about the future of Rockstar's highly profitable live-service platform, which remains popular over a decade after its debut.
GTA Online's sustained success reportedly led Rockstar to prioritize ongoing updates over GTA 5 story expansions—a decision that frustrated some players. Now, attention turns to how Rockstar will handle its transition alongside GTA 6's release.
Industry observers expect GTA 6 to introduce a revamped online experience—whether branded as GTA Online 2 or retaining the original name. This has raised concerns among current players about progress and purchases carrying over, potentially creating a hard reset later this year.
During a recent IGN interview ahead of Take-Two's earnings report, CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed these concerns indirectly by referencing NBA 2K Online's precedent. While avoiding direct confirmation of any GTA Online plans, he emphasized Take-Two's history of maintaining legacy online titles when communities remain active.
Zelnick cited NBA 2K Online's coexistence with its 2017 successor in China as evidence of Take-Two's approach—both versions continue operating concurrently to serve their respective player bases.
"We've demonstrated commitment to maintaining legacy titles when communities remain engaged," Zelnick stated, implying Rockstar might adopt similar support strategies for GTA Online regardless of GTA 6's new offerings.
While concrete details about GTA 6's online features remain scarce following December's initial trailer, Zelnick's comments suggest Rockstar may avoid abruptly sunsetting GTA Online if its player base persists. The publisher will likely reveal more about its plans as GTA 6's release window approaches, possibly following Borderlands 4's September launch.
