Tron: Ares: A Confusing Sequel Unveiled

Tron enthusiasts have a thrilling reason to mark their calendars for 2025, as the beloved franchise gears up for a grand return to the big screen with "Tron: Ares," set to premiere this October. This eagerly anticipated sequel brings Jared Leto into the spotlight as Ares, a program embarking on a mysterious and high-stakes mission from the digital world into reality.

Although "Tron: Ares" visually echoes the aesthetic of its predecessor, "Tron: Legacy," released in 2010, the new film's trailer hints at a continuation of the franchise's iconic style. The electronica-driven soundtrack, now helmed by Nine Inch Nails following Daft Punk's legacy, underscores the film's commitment to its auditory heritage. Yet, the question remains: Is "Ares" a direct sequel, or does it signal a soft reboot?

The absence of key characters from "Tron: Legacy" such as Garrett Hedlund's Sam Flynn and Olivia Wilde's Quorra raises eyebrows. Their significant roles in the previous film set a clear stage for a sequel, with Sam ready to lead Encom towards an open-source future and Quorra as a testament to the potential of digital life. The lack of these characters in "Ares" suggests a shift in narrative direction, which might be an attempt by Disney to attract new audiences following "Legacy's" $409.9 million worldwide box office on a $170 million budget.

"Tron: Legacy" centered on the journey of Sam Flynn, the son of Kevin Flynn, portrayed by Jeff Bridges, who ventured into The Grid to rescue his father and thwart CLU's plans to invade the real world. Alongside him, Quorra, an ISO—a digital being—embodied the potential of life within The Grid. Their successful return to the real world, with Quorra transformed into a human, set a promising sequel premise.

Despite this setup, "Ares" appears to sideline these pivotal characters. While it might be understandable for Disney to pivot the narrative, the absence of Sam and Quorra leaves a significant gap in the franchise's continuity. Hopefully, "Ares" will at least acknowledge their impact on the Tron universe, if not include them in unexpected roles.

PlayCillian Murphy’s Edward Dillinger, Jr. ---------------------------------------

The absence of Cillian Murphy's Edward Dillinger, Jr., is another puzzling aspect. Introduced in "Legacy" as a potential adversary to Sam's open-source vision at Encom, Dillinger was poised for a significant role in future installments. The return of the Master Control Program (MCP) hinted at in the "Ares" trailer suggests a connection to the original film's villain, yet Dillinger's absence is conspicuous. However, the introduction of Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger implies the family's continued involvement in the franchise's narrative.

Bruce Boxleitner’s Tron

The most notable omission from "Tron: Ares" is Bruce Boxleitner's Tron, the franchise's iconic hero. Boxleitner portrayed both Alan Bradley and Tron in the original film and reprised his role in "Legacy." The character's open-ended fate at the end of "Legacy" warrants a follow-up, and it would be a missed opportunity for "Ares" not to include him in some capacity, whether through recasting or another creative approach.

PlayWhy Is Jeff Bridges in Tron: Ares? ----------------------------------

The return of Jeff Bridges, whose characters met their demise in "Legacy," adds another layer of intrigue to "Ares." His voice in the trailer suggests a role that could be either a resurrected Kevin Flynn or CLU. The mystery of how Bridges' characters fit into "Ares" will be a central element to watch for, especially given the film's apparent departure from "Legacy's" established narrative.

While "Tron: Ares" promises to expand the universe with new characters and a compelling storyline, its decision to seemingly ignore key elements from "Legacy" leaves fans both excited and puzzled. The new direction, combined with the innovative score by Nine Inch Nails, sets the stage for a unique addition to the Tron saga. As we await further details, the anticipation for "Ares" continues to build, promising a thrilling return to the digital frontier.
