Ubisoft Under Fire Over Abuse Allegations at Shadows Studio

Ubisoft Responds to Disturbing Abuse Allegations at External Studio
A recent exposé by People Make Games on YouTube has revealed deeply disturbing allegations of mental and physical abuse at Brandoville Studio, an Indonesian game development studio that worked on titles including Assassin's Creed Shadows. Ubisoft, which commissioned Brandoville's work, has issued a statement expressing profound concern over the report and unequivocally condemning all forms of abuse.
The video details harrowing accounts of abuse allegedly perpetrated by Kwan Cherry Lai, the studio's commissioner and wife of the CEO. These allegations include severe mental and physical abuse of an employee, Christa Sydney, forced religious practices, sleep deprivation, and even the coerced self-harm of Sydney while being filmed. Further allegations from other Brandoville employees have emerged, detailing salary deductions under the guise of financial assistance, and the overworking of a pregnant employee resulting in premature birth and the subsequent death of her child.
Brandoville's Troubled History and Closure
Founded in 2018, Brandoville Studio ceased operations in August 2024. Allegations of abuse, however, reportedly date back to 2019. During its operational years, the studio contributed to significant game releases such as Age of Empires 4 and Assassin's Creed Shadows. Following the release of the People Make Games video, Indonesian authorities have initiated investigations, seeking to question Kwan Cherry Lai, who reportedly claims to be currently residing in Hong Kong.
The ongoing investigation raises critical questions about the accountability of those responsible and the future prospects of justice for the victims. This case, alongside numerous other reports of poor working conditions, abuse, and harassment within the gaming industry, underscores the urgent need for stronger protections and improved working conditions for employees throughout the sector. The industry must address not only internal issues but also the ethical responsibilities surrounding its relationships with external studios.
