TennoCon 2024 delivered a knockout punch with the announcement of Warframe: 1999, a major update promising a nostalgic trip back to 1999. This isn't just another expansion; it's a complete reimagining of the Warframe experience, blending retro aesthetics with cutting-edge gameplay.
The journey begins with a prologue quest, "The Lotus Eaters," launching in August 2024. This quest reunites players with a beloved character and sets the stage for the main event, introducing the world of 1999 and the new Warframe, Sevatgoth Prime, and its exclusive weaponry. Completing "The Lotus Eaters" is a prerequisite for accessing Warframe: 1999, slated for release in Winter 2024.
Warframe: 1999 plunges players into an alternate 1999, where the Y2K bug manifests as a deadly virus threatening global annihilation. The setting is Höllvania, a vibrant 90s city corrupted by Techrot. Players navigate this retro-futuristic landscape on Atomicyles, futuristic vehicles capable of bullet jumps, drifts, and even explosive maneuvers. Leading the charge is the Hex, a team of six heroes each equipped with a Protoframe, a unique Warframe design showcasing the human form beneath.
The Hex boasts a star-studded voice cast, including Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and Amelia Tyler. Interaction with the team happens via instant messaging, adding a unique, authentic 90s touch.
The update also introduces a formidable enemy: On-lyne, a 90s boy band corrupted by Technocyte Coda. Their infectiously catchy music, including the hit single "Party of Your Lifetime," will be available on major streaming platforms.
Fashion is king in Warframe: 1999. The update significantly enhances the fashion system, allowing players to equip two fashion frame loadouts and switch between them seamlessly. The introduction of Gemini Skins lets players bring the Protoframes, like Arthur and Aoi, into the Origin system, complete with fully voiced lines for combat and idle moments.
