Featuring Multiple Cities

Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, is set to expand the gaming universe by introducing a second city in addition to the familiar Night City. At the Digital Dragons 2025 conference on May 20, R. Talsorian Games founder and game designer Mike Pondsmith provided insights into the development of the sequel.

Although Pondsmith's involvement in the new game is less extensive than with Cyberpunk 2077, he remains closely connected to its progress. He shared, "I see the scripts. Last week I was wandering around talking to different departments and seeing what they had like, ‘this is the new Cyberware, what do you think?’"

Pondsmith also confirmed the addition of a new city, commenting, "I remember looking at it and going, ‘I understand the feel that you’re going for, and this really does work, it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong’. And I said, ‘yeah, I can see this working’."

CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has also been actively recruiting for Cyberpunk 2, with a recent job listing for a Lead Encounter Designer. This role involves "help[ing] formulate solutions for and help[ing] create memorable gameplay encounters that will thrill and excite our players."

The job description hints at groundbreaking developments in the gaming industry, particularly in the creation of "the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date." While specifics about Project Orion are still under wraps, the involvement of Pondsmith and CDPR's recruitment efforts suggest a sequel that will build on the rich world-building and storytelling of its predecessor.

New Footage for Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 Port

In other news, CDPR has released new footage showcasing the optimization of Cyberpunk 2077 for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The studio has uploaded around 37 minutes of B-roll videos on their website, demonstrating the game's performance on the new handheld console.

Initial reports from showcase events in New York and Paris indicated some performance issues, with Business Insider noting, "Such an intensive game playing on the Switch 2 is a fun novelty, but this definitely isn't the best way to play CyberPunk. I encountered lots of frame drops."

However, CDPR Engineer Tim Green expressed satisfaction with the port's progress in an interview with Game File on April 25. He stated, "We haven’t had to fight with fitting into memory, and the speed of the data storage has helped alleviate some of those early streaming problems. This has allowed us to focus our attention on improving other things, and we’re very happy with the result."

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is slated for release on the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. This edition will include the full base game, all updates since its launch, and the critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion.
