Former Witcher 3 Director Teases Protagonist's Day-and-Night Abilities and Limitations

Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, the former director of The Witcher 3 and founder of Rebel Wolves, has unveiled an intriguing new mechanic for The Blood of Dawnwalker. This game, developed by the newly established studio Rebel Wolves, which includes former members of the Witcher 3 team, introduces a concept popular in pop culture but novel to video games.
In an insightful interview with PC Gamer, Tomaszkiewicz discussed the challenge of crafting a narrative that diverges from typical superhero tropes. "It's hard to do those stories because you are just stronger and stronger and stronger," he noted. Seeking a fresh approach, he envisioned a protagonist grounded in reality yet possessing supernatural elements. "So I searched for an idea for the hero, which would be near the ground—or grounded—and needed to solve things in a different way. But, also, I wanted to give some kind of superhero to the players."

This led to the creation of Coen, a character who embodies the duality of being half-human and half-vampire. By day, Coen faces the vulnerabilities of a human, but as night falls, he gains access to a range of supernatural abilities. Tomaszkiewicz drew parallels to iconic pop culture figures, stating, "It's somehow interesting, this duality of the hero, which we know from Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde, for example. It's something in pop culture that is well known and wasn't explored yet in games." He believes this mechanic adds a rich layer to the game's narrative and is eager to see how players will respond to this innovative approach.
The day-and-night mechanic not only offers new strategic opportunities but also introduces unique challenges. Players might find it advantageous to engage enemies at night, especially those who are not vampires. Conversely, during the day, players will need to rely more on strategy and intellect to navigate quests without the aid of their vampiric powers.
Witcher 3’s Ex-Design Director Also Revealed “Time-as-a-Resource” Mechanic

Adding another layer of depth to The Blood of Dawnwalker, Daniel Sadowski, former design director of The Witcher 3, revealed a "time-as-a-resource" mechanic in an interview with PC Gamer on January 16, 2025. This system ties quests to a time constraint, forcing players to make critical choices about which missions to prioritize.
Sadowski explained, "It will definitely force you to make choices at some points, like what to do, and what to ignore, because you will also have to choose which content you want to do, and which content you want to ignore, in order to maximize your chances of defeating the main enemy." This mechanic encourages players to strategize their approach, offering different paths to tackle challenges while integrating seamlessly into the narrative sandbox.

Under this system, players must carefully consider the impact of each quest on future missions and character relationships. While this might seem restrictive, Sadowski sees it as a way to enhance the player's experience: "Knowing that the time you have is limited could really help crystalize what you're going to do, and why your version of the game's protagonist, Coen, is doing it."
With the integration of both the day-and-night and time-as-a-resource mechanics, The Blood of Dawnwalker promises a deeply immersive experience where every decision and action carries significant weight, shaping the narrative and gameplay in profound ways.
