EA bucks trend, keeps game prices steady
Publisher/developer EA confirms it won't follow competitors in raising game prices, maintaining its commitment to affordable gaming experiences amidst an industry-wide trend toward higher price points.
During the company's latest earnings call, CEO Andrew Wilson emphasized EA's focus on delivering "exceptional quality and outstanding value" to players, highlighting the success of its cooperative adventure title Split Fiction, which has surpassed 4 million copies sold.
"Our pricing philosophy has evolved significantly over the past decade," Wilson explained. "While physical retail sales still represent a portion of our business, we've expanded into diverse pricing models - from free-to-play experiences to premium deluxe editions."
"Whether we're offering content priced at $1, $10, or $100, our priority remains delivering unmatched quality and value," Wilson continued. "When we achieve this balance, we see consistent business growth and player satisfaction."
CFO Stuart Canfield reinforced this stance: "From a strategic standpoint, we currently have no plans to adjust our pricing structure."
This announcement contrasts with recent industry moves, including Microsoft's confirmation of upcoming Xbox game price increases alongside hardware and accessory cost adjustments. While console and accessory price hikes are already in effect, Microsoft plans to implement $79.99 pricing for first-party titles during the holiday season.
The gaming industry has seen consistent price inflation in recent years, with AAA game prices rising from $60 to $70 standard editions, and Nintendo establishing an $80 price point for upcoming Switch 2 exclusives like Mario Kart World. These increases accompany Nintendo's recent Switch 2 $450 MSRP announcement, drawing mixed reactions from fans despite analyst consensus that current economic realities necessitate higher pricing.
EA's commitment suggests forthcoming titles in its EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, and Battlefield franchises will maintain their $70 standard edition pricing.
This pricing strategy announcement follows EA's recent organizational restructuring, which reportedly affected approximately 100 positions at Respawn Entertainment (developers of Apex Legends) and approximately 300 roles company-wide.
