In the world of extraction shooters, the mantra is simple: get in, grab the loot, and get out. Exoborne, the upcoming title from Shark Mob, elevates this formula with a thrilling twist, introducing super-powered Exo-Rigs, dynamic weather effects, and the ever-popular grappling hooks. After spending around 4-5 hours with the game at a recent preview event, I left with a sense of anticipation rather than an immediate craving for "one more drop." However, Exoborne shows promise and could make a significant impact in the extraction shooter genre.

The Exo-Rigs are central to Exoborne's unique identity. Currently, there are three types of Exo-Rigs available: Kodiak, Viper, and Kestrel. The Kodiak offers a shield during sprints and a devastating ground slam, perfect for those who enjoy a more aggressive playstyle. The Viper rewards players for engaging in combat with health regeneration upon eliminating enemies and a powerful melee attack. Meanwhile, the Kestrel focuses on mobility, allowing for higher jumps and temporary hovering, ideal for players who prefer a more strategic approach. Each Exo-Rig can be customized with unique modules, enhancing their specific abilities. While the current selection of three suits might feel limiting, Shark Mob has not yet disclosed plans for additional Exo-Rigs.

Exoborne's shooting mechanics are satisfying, with guns that have a weighty feel and impactful melee attacks. The grappling hook adds a fun and dynamic way to navigate the map, offering a refreshing alternative to traditional movement. The game's weather system plays a crucial role in gameplay, with tornados boosting aerial mobility and rainfall rendering parachutes nearly useless. Even fire tornadoes add to the post-apocalyptic atmosphere, providing both a means of transportation and a deadly hazard.

Risk vs. Reward

The core of Exoborne's design revolves around the concept of risk versus reward. Upon entering the game, players face a 20-minute countdown, after which their location is broadcast to all other players. They then have 10 minutes to extract or face a killswitch. Players can choose to extract early, but staying longer increases the potential for greater loot. Loot is scattered throughout the map, in containers, on the ground, and from defeated AI enemies, but the most valuable loot comes from other players.

Artifacts represent the highest-value items in the game, functioning as loot boxes that require both the artifact itself and an artifact key to open. These are marked on the map, making them hotspots for player confrontations. Additionally, high-value loot areas are heavily guarded by stronger AI, challenging players to take significant risks for the best rewards.

The game fosters a tense atmosphere, encouraging effective communication within squads. Even if a player is downed, they can use self-revives or be resurrected by teammates, adding a layer of strategy and teamwork to the gameplay.

My main concerns after the demo revolve around the game's social and late-game aspects. Exoborne seems best enjoyed with a dedicated group of friends, which could be a drawback for solo players or those without a regular squad. Additionally, the late-game content remains unclear, with the focus on PVP and player comparison, but without specific details on what to expect.

As Exoborne gears up for its playtest from February 12 to the 17th on PC, it will be interesting to see how it evolves and addresses these concerns. With its unique mechanics and engaging gameplay, Exoborne has the potential to carve out a niche in the competitive world of extraction shooters.
