Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the GPS-powered mobile action RPG, has been officially canceled — though there's a silver lining for fans, as Square Enix confirmed active development continues for Kingdom Hearts 4.

The scrapped mobile game would have expanded the Scala ad Caelum storyline with fresh narrative content, pitting players against the Heartless. Originally targeting a 2024 launch, the project ultimately fell through.

In an unsigned update on the game's X/Twitter account, Square Enix expressed sincere apologies to awaiting players. The company cited insurmountable challenges in "delivering a service that would meet long-term player expectations" without specifying technical hurdles.

"We deeply regret disappointing those anticipating the game's release," the statement read. "Despite extensive development efforts and optimizations to create an enjoyable experience, we concluded we couldn't sustainably maintain service quality standards required for player satisfaction."

"Our gratitude goes to all beta test participants for their invaluable feedback. This decision comes with profound regret."

After acknowledging the cancellation, Square Enix reassured fans about the franchise's future: "The Kingdom Hearts series will continue evolving," with developers actively focusing on Kingdom Hearts 4 and encouraging fans to "stay tuned for forthcoming updates."

This marks the first substantive update about the anticipated sequel since January's cryptic teaser. Despite the 2022 announcement trailer, Square Enix maintained typical silence about progress, leaving the fanbase eager for details.

Series director Tetsuya Nomura has indicated Kingdom Hearts 4 will begin steering the two-decade, 18-game saga toward its narrative conclusion.
