Jason Isaacs Backs Paapa Essiedu as Snape in HBO Harry Potter Series
Jason Isaacs, who starred as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, has responded to what he calls "rude" and "racist" online criticism regarding the casting of Black actor Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation.
Essiedu, known for his roles in Black Mirror and HBO's I May Destroy You, was confirmed back in April to be taking on the iconic role of Snape, succeeding the late Alan Rickman from the original film series.

Isaacs has now publicly addressed the backlash to Essiedu's casting, expressing his full support for the actor and condemning the online hate as blatant racism.
"Paapa Essiedu is one of the most talented actors I have ever seen," Isaacs stated during a panel at FanExpo Denver, as reported by Collider. "I've seen some derogatory comments about him online. Let's be clear: that's racism.
"The entire cast for the new Harry Potter TV series is extraordinary. When people see Paapa's performance on screen, they will be left speechless—hopefully swallowing their digital tongues."
Snape is a crucial character in the Harry Potter saga, a figure whose true motives remain ambiguous for much of the narrative. It isn't until the later books and films that his backstory unfolds—revealing his complex relationship with Harry's parents and the genuine nature of his loyalty to Voldemort.
Criticism of Essiedu's casting has included arguments that he does not match Snape's physical description from the original books—a similar complaint was raised about the Black actress cast as Hermione in the highly successful stage production Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Others have suggested that a Black Snape alters the dynamics of his storyline, including his childhood bullying by Harry's father and friends and his unreciprocated love for Harry's mother.
While some consider the casting a significant departure from the source material, others argue it will bring certain elements of Snape's story into sharper relief, potentially creating a more powerful and nuanced narrative.
"The series is being developed by the same team behind the films, and they are dedicating a full season to each book," Isaacs explained. "It's going to be fantastic."
Veteran actor John Lithgow was the first to be announced for the series, in the role of Albus Dumbledore. Subsequent casting updates have confirmed Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.
The Harry Potter TV series is scheduled to begin production this year, with an expected premiere on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027.
