Slitterhead Probably \"Rough Around The Edges\" But Will Be Fresh and Original

Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama is crafting a unique horror-action experience with his new game, Slitterhead. Read on to discover his insights and learn why he describes Slitterhead as fresh, original, and perhaps, a little "rough around the edges."
Slitterhead: A Fresh Take on Horror, Despite Imperfections
Launching November 8th, Slitterhead from Keiichiro Toyama (the mind behind Silent Hill) promises a blend of action and horror. Toyama himself acknowledges a potentially "rough around the edges" feel in a recent GameRant interview. He explains, "From the very first ‘Silent Hill,’ we’ve prioritized freshness and originality, even if it means being a bit rough around the edges. That approach continues with ‘Slitterhead.’"
Toyama and his studio, Bokeh Game Studio, have poured their efforts into this project, blending horror and action with a raw, experimental style. The legacy of Silent Hill (1999), which redefined psychological horror, is undeniable. While Toyama has explored other genres since his last horror title, Siren: Blood Curse (2008), the anticipation for his return is substantial.
The meaning of "rough around the edges" remains open to interpretation. Comparing a smaller, independent studio (Bokeh employs 11-50 people) to large AAA developers with thousands of employees provides context. However, with industry veterans like Sonic producer Mika Takahashi, Mega Man and Breath of Fire character designer Tatsuya Yoshikawa, and Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka involved, and a gameplay style blending elements of Gravity Rush and Siren, Slitterhead aims for genuine originality. Only time will tell if the "rough edges" reflect experimental design or more significant concerns.
Kowlong: A City Steeped in Mystery
Slitterhead unfolds in the fictional city of Kowlong (a blend of "Kowloon" and "Hong Kong"), a 1990s-inspired Asian metropolis infused with supernatural elements. Inspired by seinen manga like Gantz and Parasyte, as noted by Toyama and his team in a Game Watch interview, Kowlong promises a unique and unsettling atmosphere.
Players assume the role of a "Hyoki," a spirit-like entity possessing different bodies to combat terrifying "Slitterhead" enemies. These aren't your typical horror monsters; they're grotesque, unpredictable, and capable of horrifying transformations, blending fear with a touch of the bizarre.
