Activision Finally Admits It Uses Generative AI for Some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Assets After Backlash Following 'AI Slop' Zombie Santa Loading Screen
Activision has finally acknowledged using generative AI in the development of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, nearly three months after players noticed inconsistencies in in-game assets. The controversy began with the Season 1 Reloaded update, where loading screens, calling cards, and Zombies event artwork sparked accusations of "AI slop." A particularly infamous example was the "Necroclaus" loading screen, featuring Zombie Santa with seemingly six fingers – a common flaw in AI-generated images struggling with hand representation. Similar issues were found in other images, including a gloved hand with an unusual number of digits. A Reddit post highlighted further irregularities in paid bundles, further fueling the debate.

Following pressure from fans and in light of new AI disclosure rules on Steam, Activision added a vague disclosure to Black Ops 6's Steam page, stating, "Our team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in-game assets." This follows a Wired report from July revealing Activision sold an unnamed AI-generated cosmetic in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 last year, part of the Yokai's Wrath bundle, without disclosing the AI's involvement. This bundle cost 1,500 COD Points (approximately $15), contributing to Activision's substantial revenue from in-game purchases.
Wired also reported that Microsoft, Activision Blizzard's parent company, laid off 1,900 gaming employees shortly after this sale, with allegations that some 2D artists' roles were replaced by AI. Activision employees reportedly underwent mandatory AI training, highlighting the company's increased reliance on the technology.
The use of generative AI in the gaming industry remains controversial, raising ethical and rights concerns, and facing challenges in consistently producing high-quality, enjoyable content. Keywords Studios' failed experiment in creating an entirely AI-generated game underscores the limitations of current AI technology in replacing human talent.
