Capcom is exploring the use of generative AI to streamline the creation of the vast number of design concepts required for its game environments. The company acknowledges the significant time and resources dedicated to generating "hundreds of thousands" of unique ideas for in-game assets.

As game development costs escalate, the industry is increasingly turning to AI tools to enhance efficiency and reduce expenses. This trend has sparked controversy, with instances like Activision's reported use of AI-generated content in Call of Duty games drawing criticism from fans. EA has even declared AI as "central" to its operations.

In a recent interview with Google Cloud Japan, Capcom's Technical Director Kazuki Abe (known for his work on titles such as Monster Hunter: World and Exoprimal) detailed the company's AI experimentation. He highlighted the considerable effort involved in designing even seemingly simple objects, citing the need for unique designs, logos, and shapes for items like televisions. This process generates a massive volume of proposals, each requiring illustrations and textual descriptions.

Abe developed a system leveraging generative AI to analyze game design documents and automatically generate design concepts. This system aims to accelerate development, improve efficiency, and provide iterative feedback for refinement. The prototype, utilizing models like Google Gemini Pro, Gemini Flash, and Imagen, has reportedly received positive internal feedback. The anticipated outcome is a substantial cost reduction and potential quality enhancement compared to manual creation.

Currently, Capcom's AI implementation is confined to this specific system. Other crucial aspects of game development, including core gameplay mechanics, programming, character design, and overall creative direction, remain under the control of human developers.
