Diablo 4's 2025 Content Plan Sparks Fan Concerns, Puzzles Former Blizzard Leader
Diablo 4 unveiled its initial 2025 content roadmap this week, outlining upcoming features for the action RPG and hinting at 2026 plans.
IGN sat down with game director Brent Gibson to discuss the Diablo 4 roadmap, covering topics from the second expansion to new IP collaborations. However, the roadmap has left the Diablo 4 community worried about the 2025 content, questioning whether it offers enough to keep players engaged.

“Wow, new Helltide colors and temporary abilities? That’s going to be thrilling!” remarked redditor Inangelion sarcastically.
Many dedicated Diablo 4 players share this frustration, expecting more compelling content updates.
“Other ARPGs introduce seasons with features like a housing system for building a home base with vendors offering new gear, or a trading system with materials that transform class mechanics,” noted feldoneq2wire.
“In Diablo 4, a new season boils down to ‘what’s the new Helltide color?’ and ‘what temporary powers or cosmetic reputations are we adding?’”
“I’m not hating on Diablo 4—I enjoy it—but this roadmap feels light on substantial content, which is a letdown,” said Fragrantbutte.
“The phrase ‘and more’ is carrying a lot of weight here,” added artyfowl444.
The online discussion grew heated enough that Diablo community manager Lyricana_Nightrayne addressed concerns on the Diablo 4 subreddit: “We kept later roadmap details vague to allow for projects still in development,” they clarified. “This isn’t everything planned for 2025 :)”
Blizzard’s approach to seasonal content in Diablo 4, with its partial reset each season, divides players. Some appreciate the fresh start, while others find deep investment in seasons futile. While some argue permanent seasonal content would overwhelm the game, others are considering stepping away until 2026 for more significant updates.
Mike Ybarra, former Blizzard Entertainment president and Microsoft corporate leader, joined the conversation on X/Twitter.
“Don’t release updates just to meet a schedule,” Ybarra advised. “Seasons shouldn’t follow a pattern of launching, patching issues for two months, then repeating.”
“Take a step back to tackle end-game challenges properly. Playing for a week, defeating an ‘uber’ boss repeatedly for a unique item, then quitting until the next season isn’t engaging.”
“Expansions take too long—aim for yearly releases. Cut back on costly, one-off story elements in an ARPG and prioritize new classes, enemy types, and lasting end-game activities.”
“Continuing to release without addressing core issues risks stagnation. Adding endless end-game activities won’t help if the same problems persist. Eventually, the clutter makes it not worth the effort.”

Fan feedback on Diablo 4’s expansions centers on the delayed second expansion, originally slated for 2025 but now set for 2026. Blizzard initially planned annual expansions, with Vessel of Hatred launching in 2024, but the next will skip 2025.
In our interview, Gibson addressed the challenges of sustaining Diablo 4 as a live service game with free seasonal updates alongside major paid expansions.
“Players are hungrier for content than ever,” Gibson noted. “Even if you meet their expectations today, those desires shift tomorrow. We must adapt quickly. Priorities can change rapidly due to another game’s release, our game’s state, or exciting new discoveries we want to incorporate.”
“Developing this way is new and highly interactive with our community. Diablo’s player base is diverse, from casual to hardcore, each with unique preferences. We aim to address different groups each season, focusing on their priorities.”
“For example, in Season 8, we’re responding to boss lair feedback with quality-of-life improvements for those players. In Season 9, we might shift to nightmare dungeons. Each season targets specific player groups, building toward an expansion that delivers something big for everyone.”
Diablo 4 Season 8 arrives in late April, with Season 9 planned for summer and Season 10 later in 2025.
