How World's FFXIV and The Witcher 3 Collabs Inspired Monster Hunter Wilds - IGN First
Monster Hunter Wilds: A Legacy Forged in Crossovers
Monster Hunter Wilds boasts numerous innovations, features, and quality-of-life enhancements. But the game's evolution began surprisingly early, during Monster Hunter World's crossover events. Specifically, interactions with Final Fantasy XIV's director, Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P), and the overwhelmingly positive player response to the Witcher 3 crossover directly shaped key gameplay aspects in Wilds.
Yoshi-P's suggestion during the FFXIV collaboration, made at a reveal event, directly influenced Wilds' HUD. He noted players' preference for seeing attack names displayed in real-time. This led to the implementation of this feature, prominently shown in the image below.

The 2018 FFXIV crossover in Monster Hunter: World offered a glimpse of this mechanic. The collaboration, featuring Cactuars, a crystal-enhanced Kulu-Ya-Ku, Drachen armor, and the challenging Behemoth fight, showcased the display of attack names during Behemoth's actions. The "Jump" emote, unlocked after defeating Behemoth, further exemplified this, displaying "[Hunter] performs Jump" on screen.
The Witcher 3 crossover served as a crucial test. The positive reception to Geralt's voiced dialogue and interactive conversations solidified the decision to incorporate similar features into Wilds. This marked a significant departure from previous Monster Hunter titles, where the protagonist remained silent.
Director Yuya Tokuda's foresight, nurtured during the World collaborations, significantly shaped Wilds' direction. The Witcher 3 collaboration, personally pursued by Tokuda, proved instrumental in realizing his vision. This insight was revealed during an exclusive visit to Capcom's Japan offices for IGN First.
