The unparalleled exposure working on such a massive franchise would provide. "It’s like putting a Harvard diploma on your wall," Karch explained. The gamble was a calculated risk, a strategic investment in future opportunities.
While Microsoft was initially shocked by the zero-cost proposal, they accepted. Although Saber initially proposed a $4 million bid, contractual clauses ultimately resulted in zero royalties for the Xbox 360 release. The studio essentially worked for free, focusing on the long-term benefits of brand association.
From Indie to Industry Powerhouse
The risk paid off handsomely. Saber's involvement in the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary remake led to further collaborations with Microsoft, including work on Halo: The Master Chief Collection alongside Bungie and 343 Industries. Crucially, Saber negotiated the removal of the royalty-killing clauses for the Xbox One port of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, securing a substantial payout in the tens of millions of dollars.
This financial windfall fueled Saber's remarkable growth. Karch's statement, "We’ve watched other people make money on our work. Now we’re going to make money on our own," encapsulates their transformation. They expanded globally, establishing studios in Spain, Sweden, and Belarus, and acquired other studios like Binary Motion and New World Interactive.
The Saber Interactive Story Continues
Acquired by Embracer Group in 2020, Saber later underwent a management buyout, returning to independent ownership under CEO Karch's Beacon Interactive. Despite this change, the studio continues its impressive trajectory, working on high-profile titles such as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 (released September 2024), John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, and Jurassic Park: Survival. The initial risk taken on the Halo remake stands as a testament to their strategic vision and unwavering ambition.
