Marathon Release Date Unveiled at Gameplay Showcase

Bungie, the acclaimed developer behind Destiny and Halo, has officially announced the release date for their much-anticipated first-person extraction shooter, Marathon, during its gameplay reveal showcase. Dive in to discover more about the game's innovative features and how you can participate in the upcoming Closed Alpha Playtest.
Marathon Coming on September 23
Returning to Tau Ceti

On April 13, Bungie unveiled a gameplay reveal for Marathon, setting the stage for a thrilling return to the Tau Ceti universe. Unlike its predecessors, this new Marathon shifts its focus to multiplayer dynamics, pitting six teams of three players against each other and AI-controlled enemies in a race to secure and extract valuable loot.
The original Marathon series, launched with the first game in 1994, followed by Marathon 2: Durandal in 1995, and Marathon Infinity in 1996, was renowned for its deep, narrative-driven single-player experiences. However, the new Marathon takes a bold step into multiplayer territory while striving to maintain the storytelling essence that Bungie is known for.

In a PlayStation.blog post dated April 12, Bungie's developers shared insights into the game's direction. Marathon Narrative Leader Jonathan Goff emphasized the game's commitment to experiential storytelling. "The interweaving of narratives, events, and characters in the original trilogy delivered a world of discovery, wonder, and misdirection," Goff remarked. "Our goal with Marathon is not to tell a story, but to build worlds in which stories can and will unfold."
Making Marathon a "Story Engine"

The reveal stream highlighted Marathon's unique approach to gameplay, where every item in a player's inventory has a sell price, and the game emphasizes what can be extracted from each map. Yet, Bungie clarified that amassing wealth isn't the sole focus. Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler, in a recent interview with PC Gamer, elucidated the game's aim to serve as a "story engine."
Ziegler explained, "What we're trying to do is say, 'how do you go on adventures and then feel that survival challenge, that survival story that you're making?' Some of the best survival stories and moments I've had in gaming are actually failures or weird things that have happened." He emphasized that success in Marathon is not just about surviving but also about creating memorable stories from each run.
Working With Fans and Creators

Throughout Marathon's development, Bungie has actively collaborated with fans and content creators. From the early stages, even before entering full production, players were invited to test prototypes and provide crucial feedback.
One significant piece of feedback was the unpredictability and perceived unfairness of the game's maps, where players could camp spawns or find loot already taken. Responding to this, Ziegler noted, "After hearing this feedback, we moved to the design we have today, where each match is a fresh start for everyone. This consistent starting point means you and your teammates can better strategize before each run, and then you can race enemy teams to fight for the loot you’re looking for."
Marathon Closed Alpha Playtest

Bungie is set to launch its Closed Alpha Playtest for Marathon from April 23 to May 4, exclusively for residents in the U.S. and Canada. Participants will get to explore four unique Runners: Blackbird (akin to Destiny 2’s Warlock), Void (with tactical invisibility), Locus (with a tactical shield), and Glitch (offering great mobility). The alpha will also feature three distinct maps: Perimeter, a woodland area for five crews (15 players), and Dire Marsh, a more open map for six crews (18 players).

To join the playtest, interested players should visit Marathon's official Discord server, navigate to the alpha-access channel, and use the "/alpha" command. Keep in mind that due to the closed nature of this alpha, an invitation is not guaranteed.
No further playtest announcements have been made beyond the specified regions. Marathon is slated for release on September 23, 2025, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates and insights by checking out our related articles!
