MindsEye Developer Addresses Performance Issues After Mixed Steam Reviews
Build A Rocket Boy, the developer behind MindsEye, is actively working to enhance the game’s performance following player feedback on Steam.
The studio’s debut title, released on June 10, has received a ‘mixed’ rating on Steam, with a peak concurrent player count of 3,302. Negative reviews primarily highlight performance issues affecting PC players, alongside reports of bugs, glitches, and unusual NPC behavior.

In response, Build A Rocket Boy shared a statement on the MindsEye subreddit, noting that its engineering team is “working tirelessly” to optimize performance. The studio announced that details about Patch 3 will be shared soon.
Here’s the full statement:
We deeply appreciate everyone who joined us as early adopters on launch day! We recognize that the current minimum spec requirements are demanding, but our engineering team is working tirelessly to optimize performance across mainstream hardware and consoles by leveraging Unreal Engine V5.6 improvements. We’ll share details on Patch 3, including these enhancements, within the next 24 hours. Beyond the main campaign, we’d love to hear your feedback on Build.Mindseye.
MindsEye, directed by former Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies, faced a challenging pre-launch period. Last week, Build A Rocket Boy urged fans to wait for the official release instead of playing early copies that surfaced prematurely.
“We want all players to experience the story simultaneously on launch day, free from preconceptions,” Build A Rocket Boy stated in response to early access concerns. “This means waiting for the official release to dive into the game.”
The studio’s mention of bias fueled speculation about comments from co-CEO Mark Gerhard, who alleged a “coordinated effort” to undermine the game and studio through negative social media posts from paid accounts or bots.
IGN raised this claim with Hakan Abrak, head of Hitman developer IO Interactive, which is publishing MindsEye. Abrak responded, “I don’t believe that. The game should stand on its own merits on June 10.”
Physical copies of MindsEye required a “significant” update to deliver “essential enhancements for optimal gameplay and character interactions.”
Days before launch, Build A Rocket Boy’s Chief Legal Officer and Chief Financial Officer confirmed their departure from the company, raising concerns among the studio’s community.

Steam’s concurrent player data doesn’t capture the full picture, as MindsEye is also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, suggesting a higher overall player count.
Priced at $59.99, MindsEye offers a “focused linear story campaign” and “single-player free roam” at launch, alongside missions like the “Destruction Site Shootout” horde mode, “Honor Amongst Thieves,” and “Friendly Fire” combat missions. It also includes six races, six checkpoint races, and three drone races. The premium pass unlocks an additional horde mode mission and an exotic cosmetics pack.
Post-launch, Build A Rocket Boy plans to roll out a “steady stream” of premium content monthly, including new missions, challenges, and assets. “With studio-developed updates and the finest community creations, MindsEye will evolve and captivate players for years,” the studio said.
The 2025 roadmap includes community updates and new missions in the summer, single-player modes, multiplayer, and additional missions in the fall, and free roam updates with new missions in the winter. Premium pass holders will receive extra missions and packs throughout the year.
