World-Scale Leveling Remains in Oblivion Remastered

In a revealing interview with VideoGamer, Bruce Nesmith, a former designer of Oblivion, confessed that the world-scale leveling system was a misstep. Despite this, the feature has been retained in Oblivion Remastered. Nesmith, who has also contributed to games like Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Starfield, praised the adjustments made to the game's leveling system, which now mirrors Skyrim's XP-based approach. He applauded Bethesda's bold move to refine the system for modern audiences.

Nesmith's critique of the world-scale leveling system stems from its impact on gameplay, where enemies scale with the player's level, making progression feel less rewarding. He noted, "I think the world levelling with you was a mistake and that’s proven out by the fact it did not happen the same way in Skyrim." This sentiment has resonated with fans since Oblivion's initial release in 2006, prompting them to develop mods to adjust the system. With the remaster retaining this feature, the modding community has once again stepped in to address it.
Oblivion Remastered is More Than Just a Remaster

The remastered version of Oblivion has exceeded expectations, going far beyond simple texture updates. Nesmith was astounded by the level of detail and effort put into the project, stating in another VideoGamer interview, "[It’s] a staggering amount of remastering. It almost needs its own word, quite frankly. I’m not sure remaster actually does it justice."

Bethesda's decision to rebuild Tamriel using Unreal Engine 5 has allowed for a significant leap in quality and detail, surpassing the limitations of the original game. The community has lauded the remaster for its high-quality execution, and here at Game8, we've given Oblivion Remastered a score of 90 out of 100, celebrating its passionate and modern reimagining of Cyrodiil.
