Hideo Kojima Revises Death Stranding 2 After Playtesters Deem It 'Too Good'
Hideo Kojima, the visionary behind *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach*, has once again proven that his creative process defies convention. According to Yoann "Woodkid" Lemoine, who collaborated with Kojima on the game’s soundtrack, the director made significant changes midway through development after early playtests received unexpectedly positive feedback. The issue? The response was “too good.” As Kojima reportedly told Lemoine, “We have to change something,” believing that widespread appeal signals a lack of artistic challenge.
In an interview with *Rolling Stone*, Woodkid revealed how Kojima approached the project not as a typical sequel, but as a deeply personal and experimental experience. Midway through development, Kojima voiced concern over the game’s reception during internal testing: “They like it too much. That means something is wrong; we have to change something.” This led to script revisions and adjustments in key gameplay moments, all aimed at ensuring the game would provoke deeper emotional reactions rather than simply satisfy player expectations.
Kojima reportedly explained his philosophy by stating, “If everyone likes it, it means it’s mainstream. It means it’s conventional. It means it’s already pre-digested for people to like it.” His goal, he emphasized, is not universal approval, but a transformative experience — “I want people to end up liking things they didn’t like when they first encountered it, because that’s where you really end up loving something.”
For Woodkid, this mindset became a defining lesson in artistry — one centered on challenging audiences rather than pandering to them. “That was really a lesson for me,” he shared, reinforcing the idea that true creativity lies in making people shift perspectives and feel something unexpected.
Death Stranding 2: A Bold Vision Beyond Expectations

With its release date set for June 26, 2025, anticipation continues to build around *Death Stranding 2*. Meanwhile, Kojima remains immersed in expanding the universe across multiple platforms, including a live-action film with A24, an upcoming anime series, and new projects like *Physint*, a PlayStation-exclusive action espionage title, and *OD*, a long-awaited Xbox-published game described as “a game I’ve always wanted to make.”
Adding to the intrigue, recent ESRB filings suggest players will be able to unleash chaos using unconventional weapons — such as bashing enemies to death with a guitar — further highlighting Kojima’s signature blend of surrealism and interactive storytelling.
