Sucker Punch Productions is set to address one of the major criticisms leveled against Ghost of Tsushima with its upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei. In a recent interview with the New York Times, the developer announced plans to refine the open-world experience, promising a less repetitive gameplay loop for fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the series.

Ghost of Yotei Promises Players The “Freedom to Explore”

The sequel, which will follow the journey of a new protagonist named Atsu, aims to enhance the open-world experience. Creative Director Jason Connell emphasized the team's intent to balance the game's challenges and introduce more unique experiences. "One challenge that comes with making an open-world game is the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over and over," Connell explained. "We wanted to balance against that and find unique experiences." Furthermore, Ghost of Yotei will expand combat options by allowing players to master firearms alongside traditional melee weapons like the katana.

Despite Ghost of Tsushima earning a solid 83/100 on Metacritic, it faced criticism for its repetitive gameplay. Reviews on the aggregate site described it as "a competent but shallow and overfamiliar attempt to replicate Assassin’s Creed style open world adventure in the world of 13th century samurai," with suggestions that a smaller scope or a more linear structure might have improved the experience.

Echoing the sentiments of critics, fans have also pointed out the game's repetitiveness, which somewhat tarnished its otherwise stunning visual and action-adventure appeal. "Ghost of Tsushima is beautiful, but insanely repetitive and dull," one player remarked. "The problem is that it all gets repetitive very quickly. There are only 5 enemies the entire game. There's sword guy, sword and shield guy, spear guy, big guy, and archer."

Sucker Punch is determined to avoid these pitfalls with Ghost of Yotei, aiming to enhance the cinematic flair and visuals that define the series. Creative Director Nate Fox highlighted the essence of the Ghost series, stating, "When we started working on a sequel, the first question we asked ourselves is ‘What is the DNA of a Ghost game?’ It is about transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan."
